If you live along Westside Road, Killiney Beach, Westshore Estates, Fintry, La Casa, Valley of the Sun, or anywhere in the North Westside area, here is one of those practical homeowner reminders that is easy to overlook — but very worth paying attention to.
The Regional District of Central Okanagan is holding a household hazardous waste round-up for authorized users of the North Westside Road Transfer Station on Saturday, July 18, 2026.
From 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., residents can bring accepted household hazardous waste items to the North Westside Road Transfer Station for safe disposal.
And yes, if you are getting ready to sell, buy, renovate, clean out a garage, or prepare a recreational property for the market, this is the kind of local service that can be surprisingly useful.
Why This Matters for Westside Homeowners
Westside Road properties often come with a lifestyle that is a little different from in-town living.
Many homes in this area have larger lots, workshops, sheds, garages, lake gear, recreational equipment, older paint cans, batteries, gas cans, pool or hot tub chemicals, and all the “where did this even come from?” items that seem to collect over the years.
For sellers, this is a great opportunity to clean out potentially problematic items before listing.
For buyers, it is a good reminder that rural, semi-rural, lake-access, and recreational properties can come with different property management responsibilities than a typical subdivision home.
Living on the Westside is beautiful — but it is not exactly a “throw everything in the bin and forget about it” kind of place.
What Can Be Dropped Off?
According to the RDCO, accepted household hazardous waste products include items such as:
- Batteries
- Electronics and computers
- Small appliances
- Domestic pesticides with the poison symbol and PCP number
- Flammable liquids and aerosols with the flammable symbol
- Gasoline in an approved ULC/Jerry can
- Household paint products
- Liquid adhesives, undercoat, and tars
- Light bulbs and fixtures
- Pool and hot tub chemicals
Items should be kept in their original containers, packed upright in an open box, and not transported in garbage bags.
The RDCO notes that leaking containers, industrial waste, and commercial waste products will not be accepted.
Selling a Westside Property? Do This Before You List
If you are thinking of selling a home along Westside Road, this type of disposal day is a perfect excuse to get ahead of the pre-listing clean-up.
Before your home hits the market, take a walk through the garage, crawlspace, storage shed, boat storage area, shop, basement, and utility room.
Look for:
- Old paint cans
- Unused stains or sealants
- Pesticides or herbicides
- Old fuel containers
- Pool and hot tub chemicals
- Batteries and electronics
- Aerosols and flammable products
- Random “mystery bottles” left behind from previous owners
Buyers notice clutter. Inspectors notice questionable storage. And nobody wants to inherit a shelf full of half-used chemicals with faded labels.
A clean, organized storage area helps your property feel better maintained, easier to move into, and less overwhelming for buyers.
Buying on the Westside? Ask Better Questions
If you are looking at homes in Killiney Beach, Westshore Estates, Fintry, Valley of the Sun, La Casa, Ewings Landing, Parker Cove, or other Westside Road communities, you are likely already drawn to the area for the lake access, scenery, privacy, and slower pace.
But smart buyers should also look at the practical side of ownership.
Ask about:
- Garbage and recycling options
- Transfer station access
- Water system details
- Septic system information
- Road access and winter maintenance
- FireSmart considerations
- Storage buildings and outbuildings
- Dock, beach, or lake access rules
- Any leftover chemicals, fuel, or materials on the property
These questions are not meant to scare you away. They are meant to help you understand what you are buying.
The Westside can offer incredible value, privacy, and Okanagan lifestyle — but it rewards buyers who do their homework.
A Small Detail That Says a Lot About Ownership
Hazardous waste disposal may not sound like a glamorous real estate topic.
No one is putting “convenient place to dispose of old paint cans” at the top of their dream home wish list.
But these local services matter. They help residents keep properties cleaner, protect the environment, and maintain the natural setting that makes the Westside so appealing in the first place.
For lake-area and rural-style communities, responsible property care is part of protecting long-term value.
